After controversial leader Mark Steyn was forced out by failing a leadership review, and still beneath 100 seats in the House of Commons, the Conservative Party was looking for an new direction to hopefully oust the New Democrats from their majority.

Maxime Bernier - The MP for Beauce is considered to be a libertarian, advocating limited federal intervention on both the economy and people's personal lives. He is a critic of the equalization program which helps rovinces with poor economies, called for decentralization, and has suggested that scientists exaggerate theories of climate change for political reasons.

Jason Kenney - A hardcore conservative, Kenney holds up the right-wing of the party. The MP from Calgary Southeast, he is an advocate for "skilled worker immigration," immigration policy favoring those with advanced degrees, and believes that foreigners who marry Canadians should not be granted citizenship due to "marriage fraud." He is credited, however, for his attempts to reach out to minority Canadians and try to bring them into the party. He is considered a strong candidate and was often thought of as a future leader.

Kellie Leitch - Leitch had been involved with the Progressive Conservative Party since she was 14, and was a staunch advocate of a merger with Reform. She is considered a social liberal (heavily involved with the gay rights outreach group LGBTory), except in regards to Islam and immigration. She has proposed a "values test" for potential immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, and has called for a special hotline for citizens to report "barbaric cultural practices."

Michelle Rempel - The youngster of the group, Rempel is a freshman MP who is already a rising star in the caucus. Well-spoken, pragmatic but undoubtedly conservative, her youth make her a dark horse candidate, popular among the soft-right g the party who don't have a home with the social liberalism of Lietch, the right-wingism of Kenney and the libertarianism of Bernier.
