I have known about it for decades, but never knew they kill the animal. It is making a spectacle out of animal cruelty.

The kind of people that would be against it the most are also the kind of people that tend to be against telling other cultures that they are wrong about something.  I remember it being a thing 25 or 30 years ago, but I rarely hear people discuss it these days.

I mean, people aren't afraid to protest Japanese whaling or such.

The Japanese aren't "victims" in the eyes of the bleeding hearts the same way Mexicans are.

edit-and I"m just spit balling here, I have no idea why we don't care that much about bullfighting.

Most media depictions of bullfighting here in America don't show the more violent aspects of it and as such many simply view it as an extreme sport. That's why it's less of a concern than whaling, which can't really be shown in a positive light to most.

It still has a powerful supporters. Although primarily associated with Spain, the bullfighting is also a thing in Portugal, and when bullfighting to (a bull's) death was banned, then-President Jorge Sampaio managed to secure an exception to this law for Barrancos in the Alentejo provinces.

It's not? I know, or know of, a number of people who have a problem with it.

Precisely because of what you said in the original post - most Anglos don't know that it is a bloodsport.

It is a political issue in Spain.

Put yourself in the core of Arles or Nīmes (France), for instance, try to shout something for or against corrida, enjoy the reactions you can have and think twice about your original post.

At least Catalonia banned it.  Also, I think Costa Rica only allows bullfights where the bull isn't harmed, interestingly.
