I'd say the average white in West Virginia is less privileged than the average white in D.C. or San Francisco. It's a cultural thing, really.

Well, of course. But by White privilege I mean the ability to disregard issues that Republicans are notoriously awful on from a social justice point of view, such as race relations, criminal justice issues, social welfare policies, and so on. That doesn't mean all White people are equally privileged, which is absurd, but only that there are frequently common strains of privilege disproportionately enjoyed by Whites that'd enable them to embrace Republican policies and values that are otherwise anathema to those who're disadvantaged. In other words: Republicans are the party of the privileged (at least more so than Democrats, although that does not exclude the Democratic Party from representing certain privileges as well) and Whites disproportionately represent and vote for that party.

Nor is the DC/SF vs rural WV disparity solely based on income.

Well there is a certain, ahem, unprivilege about liking Trump, regardless of your skin colour or income. Smiley

Honestly, based on the Dems' white millennial lead, this speaks more volumes about the current magnitude of generational gaps than about racial ones. If you adjust the numbers on the basis of the 'work with/resist' question then the Dems win white millennials by about 60/40, given how the 'work with' figure with millennial AAs is much, much higher than those who would vote GOP. Looking at old exit polls, both Al Gore and John Kerry almost certainly lost the white under 30 vote.

Best Leader for Democrats

African Americans -
Independents - Sanders 41%, Obama 36%, Hillary 10%

Honestly the most interesting thing here.

Millennials are more likely to identify as "Independent" and Blacks aged 18-29 broke for Sanders over Clinton last year. Plus Sanders supporters were also more likely to be left leaning Independents.

The generational gap between Clinton and Sanders supporters permeated across all racial groups.

Yes, that is all true. However, "independent" in this case is even less meaningful than in other groups because of the overwhelming support for Democrats in general. For a good many of those "independents", there is no real difference between their political behavior and "Democrats".

What doesn't make sense to me at second glance are the numbers when compared to proportions - based on the Obama numbers alone, it'd suggest that 35% of black millennials identified as "independent" here; 65% as "Democrat". However, looking at the Sanders numbers and reverse-engineering them, it'd suggest that those numbers are 15% and 85%, respectively.  I must be missing something here.

How many indy-ID'd blacks are there? Presumably the main reason to do so is because you wanted to express your disapproval of the establishment.

White privilege is not just about income...

True, BUT LACK of privilege among whites is largely related to income. If Democrats can Focus themselves on that economic point, the issues of white privilege and Republicans sadly being weekly social justice issues will speak for themselves as long as it's clear they're not being abandoned, even if they are not the centerpiece of party platform

Here's my view on privilege:
If the poor (of all races) are on a sinking ship, Whites, White Latinos and Asians all are a little less underwater than African Americans overall. But it doesn't mean they all aren't sinking. Instead of pointing fingers at eachother, the poor of all races should join together and vote for each other's mutual benefit. The Democratic Party should sell that message rather than make privilege purely a racial issue, because making it based solely on race turns voters off.

To be fair, they didn't ask what to work with him on and what to resist him on. On opposing the TPP and similar agreements, the Democrats should work with Trump, but on healthcare, immigration, and criminal justice, the Democrats should resist Trump.

I don't know what's more depressing. That only one group views climate change as a top-3 issue or that white millennials think terrorism is a top-3 issue.

Interesting that education clocks in as top-3 for two groups, but I suspect this is more related to student loans and the cost of education rather than pure education policy.
