Most of the countries mentioned in this thread are not third world, especially in Huck Finn's list. Egypt, India, China, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina and Chile are all certainly not third world.

Seriously. How we define the third world? There was the thread about this somewhere where I myself included for example South Africa, Brazil, Argentina and Chile to second world. However there is an old definition which define all countries outside of Europe, North America, Australia and Japan as third world so that was on my mind when I wrote my list.

You are largely correct Huckle that the EU is far ahead of the rest of the world.  In fact great swathes of the USA both in terms of geography and demography are 'third world'.  While the overall per capita GNP in this benighted land is comparable to Western Europe, the inequality makes this place look and feel like a third world country in many way.
