Well that assumes that Islamic hordes are worse than Christian hordes.  Frankly, in the 8th century, I'd much rather live in the average Islamic land than the average Christian land.

Bullsh**t! The Byzantine Empire had much more to do with that. Charles Martel won one small battle to keep the muslems from getting to France from Spain. The Byzantine Empire blocked the muslems from entering Europe via Turkey/Greece for over 700 years! This gave Europe time to become powerful enough to repel them on their own.

One of the most overrated Europeans in history, and that's saying something.
