That's because it is in only 484 theaters in the US.  With so few theaters showing it, limited screenings, and a lot of media hype, initial ticket sales will be high.  However, it doesn't have much in lasting ability once/if it hits all the theaters.

You know, Hollywood revenues are dropping like Wile E Coyote after he falls over a cliff. The fact that they make 'liberal', 'cultured' movies is perfectly fine, but sometimes some good old fashioned red-meat movies are the way to go (or even those SFX-heavy plot-poor humdingers). Some people don't want a complex or moving moral message in every darn movie they watch: they just want something that goes well with popcorn and a date. And no, I don't think Brokeback Mountain sounds like a good date movie, at least not for straight folks like me . Also, it would be nice if the messages weren't 95% from one side. An old quote from a movie studio producer was "If you want to send a message, call Western Union." The corollary to that is, "but if you do want to send messages, don't make it the same darn message every freaking time!"

She had to come back the next day because it's the only theater in the area showing the movie, and it's only showing it twice a day.  *laughs*
