When did he serve, Nick?  I know Maryland doesn't currently have a GOP senator.

But what did he actually do?  [And what has Lincoln Chafee actually done, for that matter?]

i admire the way chafee stands up to the righties (in a low key way)  chafee is also committed to environmental protection.

as for mac, ill let nick explain to us what all he did.  i just vaguely remember him and i may be confusing him with someone else.

maryland currently has one of the worst senate delegations.

He served from 1969-1987.  Mikulski replaced him in the senate.

I only know the bare minimum about Mathias.  Apparently he was a very liberal Republican.  This old guy that lives across the street from me, a die hard Democrat, says that Mathias used to receive union endorsements across the state because of his pro-labor voting record.  He also says that Mathias is the only Republican he's ever voted for in his entire life.

Bob Novak (or maybe it was Buchanan) once referred to Mathias as a communist.

And thats about all I know.  Maybe States can add on to what Ive said.

I guess you don't really have an opinion about him, then.  He sounds like Republican Senator Jacob Javits of New York, who served during a similar period.  He left office in 1981 after being defeated by Alphonse D'Amato.

flyers, barring an unexpected death or resignation, you are stuck with your delegation until at least 2010.

Well the death will soon be replaced by Barbara Hafer and it's likely Bob Casey will be in office come this time next year.
