I think the College Democrats on campuses all over America should try to illustrate the absurdity of legacy admissions by conducting a 'Legacy Admissions Bake Sale'.

During this event, the average student who had to work hard to get into college would be charged 75 cents for an item. But the rich kids who benefited from legacy admissions would be charged only 50 cents.

Isn't that absurd? Well, that's the whole point. It's to illustrate how ridiculous legacy admissions are.

Or, you can pay $1 for an item and not be judged based on whether you have a privileged economic background.

Of course you know the whole event would be shut down because it dares to make fun of a stupid policy like legacy admissions.

Seriously, the bake sale idea is absurd, but I'm just mentioning it to make a point.

I've never understood why Republicans support legacy admissions and Democrats support race-based affirmative action.  The sane position is to oppose both.

I like the idea, but I like the affirmative action bake sale better.

One is government-enforced.  One is just money-enforced.

Race-based affirmative action makes much more sense than legacies. Last I checked, children of alums were not a persecuted group (they never had to go to segregated schools, different restrooms and water fountains, etc.)

Last I checked, no one graduating high school these days had to go to segregated schools, different restrooms and water fountains, etc.

I don't believe in legacy admissions at state schools that have a history of past discrimination, since the legacy advantage is effectively then denied to people who were refused admission in the past for illegitimate reasons.  Legacy admissions bring past discrimination into the present.

Exactly. Even with schools that don't have a history of explicit past discrimination, legacies will still disproportionately benefit upper-class whites.
