I plotted life expectancy vs some  of the individual  components of that data, i.e. % smokers, % obese and % without healthcare. All seem to show a correlation but obesity seems to show the closest correlation. That's just an eyeball correlation though. I don't have software to run a correlation analysis.

Kerry won most of the top states. Bush 2004 won all of the bottom 18.

Minnesotan food is not particularly famous.  It includes

Hotdish

Jello Salad:

Pickled Herring:

Lefse:

Lutefisk:

A few more palatable things:

Pan-fried walleye:

Wild Rice Soup:

For those who don't know:

Lutefisk is a traditional recipe brought over from Norway and Sweden and usually eaten around Christmas time.  It's cod or other whitefish that is soaked in cold water for 4 days, then soaked in a water/lye solution for 4 days, and then soaked in water again.  It is then steamed.  It has a gelatinous texture and stinks really bad.  It is typically served with bacon, lefse (potato tortillas... again, scandinavian), mashed pea stew, and different sauces.

We are insanely proud of our bad food.  Our cuisine mostly comes from Lutheran potluck dinner functions in which easy-to-make recipes that can feed large numbers are popular including thousands of variations of hotdish (casserole to all you 'southerners'), jello salad, and various forms of rice-desserts.

Other than that, we're healthy because when it's 40 below zero, you have to run everywhere, 'lest ya freeze to da ground and haf ta goooo see da good Lord a bit early der don'tcha know!  That'd be a heckuva deal, I'll tell ya what!'

Lefse, now I am hungry, from one Scandinavian state to another I applaude you (lutefisk by the way IS gross)
What I find interesting is that I think that even the food here in the Pacific Northwest is too heavy... I think European portions are jsut right
