Merriam-Webster defines "doublespeak" as:

"language used to deceive usually through concealment or misrepresentation."

Well, in the debate over illegal aliens there has been an incredible amount of doublspeak.

The first effort was to replace "illegal" with "undocumented."

The second effort was to redefine "amnesty" as 'instant citizenship.'  This effort at doublespeak was the product of George W. Bush.

Merriam-Webster's definition of amnesty is:

"the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals."

Now, a third effort at doublespeak has emerged.  It seems that Florida State Senator Frederica Wilson would like to ban the use of the term "alien" as referring to non-United States citizens residing in this country since she believes that "an alien to me is someone from out of space."  Her bill is SB 2154.

She also seems to believe that all illegals who come to this country are "immigrants."  Even Opebo recognizes that many of them are "sojourners" who come to the United States for a period of time and then leave.

One of the first things a person trained in forensic debate learns is to define the terms.  The proponents of open borders and amnesty have teally gone wild in trying to twist the terms extremely.

I'm also a sojourner - was in the US for a period of time, but couldn't wait to leave.

I believe in giving credit where it is due.

Its nice to know that some people can distinguish between the differnt therms, " immigrant" and "sojourner."

So how does sojourner differ from expatriate?

I guess an expatriate is rich and a sojourner poor...

Where, first, here are the dictionary definitions:

Sojourner "to stay as a temporary resident"

Expatriate "to withdraw (oneself) from residence in or allegiance to one's native country."

Now, typically a sourjourner intends to return to his/her native country whereas a expatriate does not share that intent.

Everybody get ready for more doublespeak on this issue.

Kennedy and McCain are pushing through a bill that will include amnesty (of course they won't call it that) and will actually REDUCE enforcement of existing laws (what they are doing in their bill is to first prohibit anyone outside the federal government from enforcing laws on illegal presencece in this country, while Bush has pledged to make it clear to federal agents that if they dare to enforce laws against illegal aliens Bush will have them prosecuted on phony charges, sent to a prison far from their home, and attacked by federal inmates).

The two slimebags will call this atrocity 'comprehensive' immigration reform.
