That simple reading error may have been his finest moment.

I disliked him from the start when I first registered and saw him praising Jesse Helms and defending segregationism

Need I remind everyone of this thread, where you managed to defend Jesse Helms, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and apartheid all at once while claiming that racism isn't such a bad thing after all?

FF, although I'd probably never vote for him.

Jesse and Dot Helms had two (2) daughters.  One Christmas, they read an article in a newspaper of a 9 year old boy in an orphanage who had cerebral palsy.  He said he wanted a real Mom and Dad for Christmas.  Jesse and Dot Helms adopted that boy and raised him.  Think about that; these were two (2) people who didn't NEED to have a child (they had two daughters), but did this because God led their hearts to do so.

Joe Biden and Jesse Helms were friends in the Senate.  This happened because one day in the Senate,
Biden tore into him in a public statement.  Mike Mansfield (D-MT), the Senate Majority Leader, pulled the young Biden aside and asked him if he knew that Jesse and Dot Helms had adopted a special needs child.  Biden hadn't know that; he actually approached Helms and apologized for his harsh words and they were trans-partisan friends after that, even while disagreeing on most things.

My wife and I adopted and took on our step-grandson who has ADHD in our 50s, but that's nowhere near the kind of leap of faith that the Helms's took.  Would any of you do this?  I don't know, but they affected a life positively and deeply in a way that few people ever do.  There are millions of people with all the right positions and all the right advocacy that have never affected a life for the good as Jesse Helms has.  Perhaps people ought to see the world from more than just a political perspective.

I never knew that, that’s really inspiring. Plus he helped to end AIDS in Africa with Bono at a time when it was stigmatized.

He was a courageous legislator who stood on principle. He didn't go along to get along. Remember that he was one of only three Senators, and the only Republican, who voted against RFRA in 1993.

And he was a good person who could admit the error of his ways. Late in his career, he admitted he was wrong and devoted much of his efforts and political capital to helping fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. Even liberals like Joe Biden and Madeleine Albright cherished him as a friend.
