I support vanity plates for the sole reason that they alert me to the presence of obnoxious drivers.

I almost never notice plates.  If they are unusual or I'm at a stopped at a light, they'll still rarely catch my attention.  Is there a correlation with vanity plates and "obnoxious" drivers?  More so than vehicle type/brand/condition and driver demographics and location?  A very young male driving a Dodge Aggressivename with dents and missing a bumper in downtown Big City is going be more obnoxious than a 50 year old in a slightly used Camry in Peoria, no matter the status of their plates.

The type of personality that buys vanity plates is, in my experience, the type of personality to be a bad driver.

Obviously government, since plates are literally government property. Vanity plates are just that - a moderate tax on vanity, which I am completely okay with.

There is evidence of a correlation between vanity plates (and personalizing your car in general) and road rage. The idea is that the more you put into making your car an extension of your personality, the more likely you are to get aggressive in defending it
