Let's say, for instance, you live in Canada and are part of the Liberal Party. Should you have an I avatar because you're not part of any American party or should you have an O avatar because you are technically part of a party, just not one that is represented by the avatar choices?

Personally, I'm a supporter of the Conservative Party of Canada, and I have an 'I' avatar for independent, because I don't really have a preference for any American party, and I interpret the avatar to mean one's preference in American politics.

Non-American users' avatars also probably vary to a large degree depending on their party preferences in the US and whether or not they see American political parties as being analogous to those in their own country.

With that said, my observation amongst Canadian users on Atlas is the following;

R avatar: Usually used by right wing Canadians who support both the Conservative Party of Canada and the GOP in the US (often Canadians who now live in the US)

I avatar: Usually used by Canadians who support the Conservative Party of Canada but have no strong preference for any US party (however, some Canadians with this avatar seem to consider themselves independents in both countries)

D avatar: Supporters of Liberals in Canada and Democrats in the USA (some might also be moderate conservatives in Canada but support the Democrats in the US)

O avatar: This one is usually used by left leaning users, either Liberal or NDP supporters in Canada and Democrat supporters in the US.

S avatar: This one is used by more strongly left-wing Canadian users, they are usually NDP supporters in Canada and they (probably) would be left-wing progressive Democrats in the USA

This seems about right.

The O avatar is aesthetically superior to the I avatar. In any case I am not from the USA and I have an S avatar because I am a socialist (in a broad sense).

Before the S avatar was introduced I usually had a D one (with a few stints of a G one when I was particularly frustrated). Obviously since this is a forum primarily about US politics I take my avatar as primarily reflecting my stance toward US politics, although I think in practice avatar colors have become more markers of ideological tendencies than anything else.

As a foreigner it seems logical to me to have an I avatar.
I'd find it also curious if an American voter had the avatar of a Greek party.

American using a Canadian avatar. I do sometimes switch to orange during a Canadian election for the NDP. This time it’s only so I can make an “Ope!” joke about going to Minnesota for the first time.

I use the Constitution Party avatar more as a stand-in for conservative than because I affiliate with the group. Well, in online spaces anyway it applies, as I'd say I'm more liberal than about half of my friends and family in real life.

I'm a member of Germany's SPD. However, this is (mainly) a US forum and we can't have avatars for each party in every country. So it seems logical to chose the avatar of the party you support in the US (if you have a preference). Since I strongly support the Democratic Party, it seems logical to me to use a D-avatar.

I use the Conservative avatar so that it spells out CANT.
