Everyone ought to be free to make their own choices, but in my personal opinion...the celebration of not having sex, especially considering the reasons that most religious people give for abstaining...it's just silly and ridiculous.

If I remember correctly, it's a ball that a father takes his daughter to. It's a formal affair. Then they dance, and drink, and celebrate the daughter's virginity. Maybe some of those girls don't consider anal sex, but I digress.

I agree that the thread should be locked.  I interpreted the question to be about Purity Balls, in which the daughter ceremonially gives her father a key that the father will give to her groom on her wedding day.  I'm hardly a libertine, but the symbolism is so authoritarian and patriarchal that it gives me the creeps.
