I'd probably get in trouble for sitting down during O Canada. Even though I often feel like it.

It's a better song, though.

They should play La Marseillaise instead.

Wasn't able to do anything with the Pledge today, as I had a test and the sub didn't want to interrupt us. FF

Agreed. One of the finer national anthems.

I once again didn't stand or recite the Pledge in 2nd period, but my teacher caught me this time. She walked up to my desk, which unlike last time I did it, is near the front, and stated that while I do have to right to not say the Pledge, I do not have the right to not stand during the Pledge. She's said this before when kids with greater testicular fortitude didn't stand during the Pledge. I'm just wondering about the validity of this ruling, which was supposedly rule by the Supreme Court with respect to Quakers. Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

Well, usually I just stand up so I don't get in trouble, but just say a bunch of gibberish instead of the actual fascist words. Yesterday, however, the teacher wasn't looking in my direction, so I got away with sitting down. Funny that you of all people would stand up to a pledge that refered to the United States as "indivisible".

the SCOTUS ruled by a 6-3 vote in 1943 (WV Board vs Barnette) that no student can be forced/compelled to stand during the pledge in a public school.  I believe I exercised my constitutional right here every day while in high school.

it is really awesome when you get confronted about it because the teachers are all "omg i kno somebody that died in Iraq omgg how could you disrespect him im sending u 2 detention!"  the next day just print them out a summary of the court case and what was resolved, and watch the jingoism within said teacher cry its own set of tears.

Thank you! I didn't see this before. I'll have to bring this up in a few weeks. I'd show it to her sooner, but I don't like to be on a teacher's bad side. Thanks again.

According to the Jehova's Witnesses case, you can not stand, on 1st Amendment grounds.  I'm not sure if it applies here, though.

No you don't have to stand, regardless of your religious views.  The decision was ruled on a free speech basis, rather than religious one.

LOL, no one at my high school ever stood for the pledge and no one cared that we didn't.

I wish my school was that liberal.

My high school did not even have the pledge. Nor did my middle school. The last time I heard it recited was 6th grade. There's no way in hell I would ever say it today, I consider it idolatry and a grave sin. I wouldn't say it in high school either but for entirely different reasons as I was an atheist for most of high school.
