Very widely, at least among Orthodox Jews. I doubt there are many who have not heard of him.

A quick skim of the Wikipedia article doesn't show anything particularly awful that he did. I guess he was a false prophet, but that I don't really care about that, since I assume most "prophets" were false, or greatly exaggerated.

Even so, he caused a huge amount of infighting within the Jewish world, the like of which hadn't been seen since the destruction of the Temple, and hasn't been seen since.
