Say President McCain was elected in '08.

What would the 2010 Midterm elections look like? Assume the Congressional results of the 08 election are withstanding (Specter doesn't switch parties).

How would the Dems and GOP do.
How would Obama/Clinton/Biden do? Who would be their challengers?

To elect a President McCain, we must assume a different set of U.S. Senators. Most likely, we would have seen a 57-43 Congress at the beginning of 2008, with Ted Stevens and Norm Coleman both being re-elected. I'd say it is possible that Sununu of New Hampshire and Smith of Oregon would have been elected, giving the possibility of a major swing to McCain.

But for continuity's sake, let's presume 57-43. But I guess Lieberman would be appointed SOS, so assume 56-44, and then presume 57-43 again, with Specter's conversion.

Corzine probably would have been re-elected in this scenario, IMO. The election may not have had to do anything with Obama, but anti-GOP sentiment would have kept Christie out. McDonnell still defeats Deeds, albeit by a smaller margin, finally breaking a Virginia tradition

Martha Coakley defeats Scott Brown in the special election to replace Ted Kennedy, a relatively unknown State Senator, in a landslide. Some Democrats tout her as a future presidential candidate.

I'd guess Arlen still switches midstream to save his ass, but this time, he will be victorious in the primary.

As for November, I'd expect the Democrats once more to make gains, albeit smaller then the last two elections. Democrats gain a net of three seats in the Senate, including Arizona, with Senator Napolitano. I can provide a map if necessary, if you would like to see my prediction there.

Hillary would be preparing a presidential run in 2012, which she would win in a landslide, defeat Sarah Palin.

Biden would continue to serve as Senator from Delaware, keeping his chairmanship. Since he does not become Veep, there is no special election.

Obama might try his hand in the governor's race, defeating Blago easily. But I don't know really what would happen there, although I do know Obama would want a second shot at the presidency later on, perhaps in 2020.

I think that McCain would have ran for reelection in 2012 in this scenario. Whether he would have won would ahve depended on his approvals and the state of the economy. I agree with everything else you wrote, other than that Obama will run again for the Presidency. I think that if he would have lost in 2008 in such a favorable enviornment, his credibility would have been tarnished too much to run for President ever again (think Gore in 2000).

I'm not so sure that McCain would have ran, personally. He was old and tired as it was. (Can you imagine McCain President at 80?)

Yeah, perhaps you are right about Obama. I didn't say he'd win, though. And Gore would easily have won in 2008 had he ran, in my opinion.

McCain promised to serve only one term. So it would have been Romney or Palin for the republicans and Hillary for the Dems

McCain did not promise it, but I think that it would have been a smart move. I do think that he would have ended up serving only one term

He planned to serve only one term and thought of himself as a one term President if he won...he just didnt feel the need to announce it
