If Barack Obama runs for re-election in 2012, in general, are you more likely to vote for President Obama or for the Republican Party’s candidate for president?

43% - The Republican Candidate
35% - Obama

...

45% - Obama
37% - Palin

38% - Obama
38% - Romney

40% - Obama
26% - Pawlenty

40% - Obama
38% - Huckabee

38% - Obama
24% - Barbour

Biggest reason for this trend is there are Lots of Undecided Dems in the generic poll; Obama can't even pull 70% of them against a Generic R.  Against named candidates however, most of those voters come home to Obama.

That's not exactly a good thing for Obama, as it seems a good portion of his base simply views him as the lesser of two evils against a Republican candidate.

which is why Dems should really worry about someone like Thune or Pence being the GOP nominee.

Pawlenty and Barbour are obviously suffering from Name Recognition Syndrome (NRS).

Pawlenty might as well pack it in.  Don't see how he would generate any interest among the GOP primary voters.  Though his state would garner him some consideration for the VP slot.

People think they don't like Obama until they consider the nutters who the GOP might actually field.

Memphis!  Good sig photo.  It's exactly the kind of thing Democrats should be doing to pound Republicans in the next 6 weeks but sadly and predictably, will hold their fire.

Anyway, yes, I think whoever the Republicans nominate is likely to have plenty of places where he or she can be hit and Obama's approvals will start to float up once the GOP nomination is settled.

President Obama would lose to a RINO, but neither Senator from Maine is running.

Obama is pretty much screwed if this poll is correct.  Around 80% of the undecideds in the matchups are white.

Most undecideds are white normally, so that's not a killer bullet for him.  What's worse news is that he can't pull more than a solid 40% against anyone but Palin, as an incumbent president.
