The House elections left the Democrats with a net gain of two seats, while they gained Senate seats in Delaware, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri (balanced by Republican gains in Virginia and Nevada), meaning that Republicans retained their majorities in both the House and Senate.

January 27, 2001

President Gore outlined his goals in his inauguratory State of the Union address.  He pledged to work for “real reforms to allow every American affordable access to quality healthcare” including prescription drug coverage for Medicare recipients, making it easier for patients to challenge HMOs in class-action lawsuits, and (in a nod to Republicans) increasing the use of tax-free medical savings accounts to pay for medical costs.  He suggested “innovative reforms to education in order to invest in America's future” including national testing standards and programs to increase federal educational cost sharing in lower-income and minority communities, and for the recognition that “we can only have quality education if our quality teachers receive fair pay for their work.”  He suggested “community initiatives to end the specter of violent crime once and for all,” citing the work of Republican mayor Rudy Giuliani in New York.  He promised to “support sustainable environmental initiatives to ensure a cleaner, greener, healthier economy for our children and grandchildren.  A healthy nation is a strong nation.”  He pledged to “secure our promise to America's seniors by passing critical “lockbox” legislation to protect Social Security” and for “balanced tax relief for middle-class families” via new tax credits.

It appears that Gore's agenda is just Bush's agenda minus the tax cuts plus the environmental issues.

I'm wondering where this will lead... I'm hoping for another Conservative in 2004 to finally win.
