Does any one know if the Democratic counties in the Confederacy today had the highest density of plantations pre-Civil War?

I'm just curious as to whether the descendents of such family's have retained their antipathy towards the GOP

The Democratic counties in the confederacy today are mostly majority-black, except for some urban ones (and some Tennessee ones, and some Hispanic ones in Texas), so I don't quite get your question.

Thanks.

It's just that my lineage on my maternal grandfather's is in the Georgia plantocracy. He came from Georgia and his family were fiercely Democratic and had a deep-rooted antipathy towards the party of Abe Lincoln. I was just wondering if similar attitudes were held by others.

states rights is always bragging about being an umpteenth generation american with relatives who fought in that war.  Though I forget on which side.  Both, as I recall.  I can't say that I know that many Americans whose ancestors have been here that long.  Mine certainly haven't.  I think the big waves of migration started long after that war was over anyway.  But if you could find pockets of WASP/yankee many-generation Americans, it would be in New England and in the South.  Those regions are certainly the most anglophilic regions in the country.  The rest of us are Germans and Irish and Italian who migrated here in the early 20C.  My guess is that the Nixon strategy would have overcome any antipathy to which you refer.  Though I have no data to back that up.  As Trondheim points out, those Gore counties are mostly Black.  If Kerry won them as well (and I'm sure he did), it would, no doubt, have been due to Edward's influence.

I will note this:  On the big antibellum homes in and around Columbus, I see equal numbers of Bush and Kerry signs.  Just an anecdotal piece, but rather interesting.  I'm not so sure that's multigenerational anti-USA antipathy, but rather the natural attraction to moral fluidity among the economically and geographically mobile that would explain the Kerry signs.  Who knows?  Shall I go out with a pad and pen and poll?  Actually, I may.

The reason the old Plantation counties still vote Democrat isn't because of any descendants of slaveowners, its because of descendants of the slaves.  These counties have big majorities of desperately poor, highly oppressed black people.

If you look at the map of the deep south the "black belt" as its called is where the majority of LARGE plantations were. Large plantations were NOT a majority in the south but those are the areas where they mostly were.

I am reminded of what a wise man once said about the parade of nations at the Olympics.  It went something along the lines of:

I lvoe how you see the Korean team come in and they are all Koreans and very proud of their flag and nation. Then the Russians come in and they are all Russian and proud.  The same goes for each nation as they come in.  Then the Americans come in and all of a sudden everyone from the other nations is under one flag.  Africans, Asians and Europeans all under the same flag and all proud of it.

Not an exact quote but that is the jist of what Bush said.
