Which state has the most liberal Democratic Party, overall, and which state has the most conservative Republican Party, overall?

From my observations:

Most liberal Democratic Party: California
Most conservative Republican Party: Texas, Arizona, or Colorado

yeah pretty much

In California 15/34 of the democrats are in the progressive caucus

In Texas, Ron freakin Paul is probably the most moderate of the Texas Republicans. He is the only republican out of the 23 republicans not in the study committee.

not really. Most California Republicans are like Pete Wilson, Arnold Schwarzanegger, Mary Bono, Brian Bilbray, Pete McCloskey, Tom Campbell, Steve Horn et al.

According to this chart

Most liberal Democrats: California
Most conservative Republicans: California
Most conservative Democrats: Mississippi
Most liberal Republicans: Rhode Island
Least difference between the parties: Rhode Island

You'd think it would be pointless for there to be a party called the Moderate Party in Rhode Island. Note that they ran someone against Chafee.

What do you mean by state party and state GOP?  Are you talking about the actual members of the state parties (people who go to conventions, etc.), or electorate, or elected officials?

Most conservative Republicans: California

Quite unbelievable... California GOP more right-wing than Alabama's, Oklahoma's or Utah's ?

What's stranger to me, speaking of Utah, is how liberal that diagram shows Utah Democrats as being.

It's not really surprising when you consider that Utah Democrats are pretty much confined to the Salt Lake City area. There's really no opportunity for conservative Democrats to win in other parts of the state because everywhere else is reflexively Republican. Only one Democrat in the legislature represents an area outside of SLC -- she represents some areas in southeastern Utah that are actually swingy, Carbon, Grand, and San Juan Counties.

The California legislature probably has the worst relations between the two parties, so it's least likely that they will agree on a piece of legislation (to the point of absurdity, as an example Gov. Brown just proposed eliminating redevelopment agencies, a conservative proposal, which the Democrats supported and the Republicans opposed).  They also have gerrymandered themselves so perfectly that every single seat in the state legislature is safe.
