Tricia Erickson: 'An indoctrinated Mormon should never be elected as President'

These types of articles are particularly hilarious to me, being an atheist.  It's the ultimate in kettle and pot accusations, and no one seems aware of that fact.  But looking at it from a different perspective would be nice.  What do you guys think?  The author singles out not only Mormons, but Muslims as well, as not trustworthy as Presidents.  Is it the same as Kennedy's Catholic criticisms or completely different?  I know this has been an issue for a while, but I don't recall actually discussing it before.

I think it might be a matter of the LDS being a "new" religion, implying that its practitioners are more likely to actually believe the things they say, while being Christian is just something you do in the US.  Frankly, I don't see it as an issue: as I said in another thread, I'd gladly vote for a Udall for president.

I don't particularly like LDS as a belief system, but Mormons tend to be some of the nicest, most genuinely good people you'll ever meet.

I would rather have a Mormon in the White House than an Evangelical.  At least Mormons, in their "fake heresy of a religion," do some good for communities and go on serious charitable missions.  Evangelicals are all egotists who don't really care about the state of world affairs as much as they do fulfilling ridiculous Biblical prophesy.

If they are 'the nicest, genuinely good' as Mikado says, then lets hope they stay out.  People who are 'good' I find repugnant.  Pius bastards.

I dunno, it seems like this crossed a line.  It definitely belong in the dictionary next to the word "hyperboly" and "invective."

This makes me chuckle.

Reading this kind of reminds me of Alex Jones video of Bohemian Grove.  Sure it's kind of freaky and all but should we really be scared to death of a bunch of kooks?

Indeed. The parents of gay children could not be nicer about completely and totally abandoning and disowning their children. Or putting them through dangerous electroshock aversion therapy.

Mormons are some of the creepiest kind of good -- people with "good intentions" who do more lasting harm to people than they can even comprehend.

Deadly as the viper peering from its coil
The poison there is coming to the boil
Ticking like to time bomb
The fuse is running short
On the verge of snapping if it's caught
And all the pressure that's been building up
For all the years it bore the load
The cracks appear, the frame starts to distort
Ready to explode Jawbreaker
Crouching in the coner
Wound up as a spring
Piercing eyes that flash are shimmering
Muscles all contorted
Claws dug in the dirt
Every ounce of fibre on alert

Not sure what it has to do with this, but Judas Priest is still awesome.

Nothing at all, just felt like quoting it.
And Judas Priest is awesome.

In 1960, bigots of that era were asking

Can a Catholic serve as President?

Now we have bigots of this era asking

Can a Mormon serve as President?

We all know how 1960 turned out, the first Catholic President.

Well, 2012 could result in the first Mormon President.

Bigots will always be with us, but they will not prevail.

In other words, Romney and Huntsman are preferable to Bachmann and Palin.

If it doesn't, maybe Walter Cronkite's narration will. Perhaps Mormons are really not worth being concerned about when world leaders are running around "neckeed"* in the woods (* a Clintonism).

Again, read Them by Jon Ronson.  The last chapter is his sneaking into the Bohemian Grove accompanied by Alex Jones (when Jones shot that video).
