In an Austin interview with Mark Halperin, Rick Perry says he has decided he wants to be president, talks about the advice he got from George W. Bush, and says he would compete against Barack Obama in California.

I agree that it's silly but certain crazy people think Obama would win Kentucky against Perry in this economic/political climate so...yeah...

Versus Bachmann or Perry, I can actually see Obama winning Kentucky.

From post #1 in the thread:

Any polls for Kentucky?

I know McCain won it by double digits last time, but from the way everybody in Kentucky is talking lately, I'd have to think Obama is going to wipe the floor with the GOP this time.

I know Perry has a strong record of job creation, but I for the life of me don't understand the hype around this man. Didn't he talk about secession a few years ago?

His "strong record of job creation" is (AFAIK) mostly low wage, part time jobs.  Sure, that's better than nothing, but it's not as great as people have been selling it.  And then you have to remember he's leaving Texas in a budget catastrophe as bad or worse than California's.

This Texas legislature took steps to close that so called 'budget catastrophe'.

I hope Rick Perry does attempt to win CA and put resources there. He'd be wasting so much money while Obama invests in states like Ohio and Florida.

Are you saying that other states shouldn't have the chance to be included in the political campaign process?

I mean if you don't have a chance to win a state what is the point of using energy there when you need it for states like VA NV PA OH or FL? It's like sending your 1000 troops to conquer enemy territory with 100000 guards  when there is still unclaimed land somewhere else with your opponent sending around 1000 troops there. You are letting your opponent claim that land and wasting sources.

LOL

Yeah, he wants to be President...of Texas.

No one who advocates dividing the United States doesn't deserve to be in the discussion to be PRESIDENT of the United States.

This Texas legislature took steps to close that so called 'budget catastrophe'.

Steps which include laying off almost a third of Texas's public school teachers, forcing hospitals to downgrade their trama centers and lay off a bunch of workers, forcing hundreds of nursing homes across the state to close and kick out tens of thousands of seniors, not to mention the budget's shoddy accounting gimmicks like delaying a $2.3 billion payment by a single day so it technically counts for the next fiscal year. The Texas Legislature's own Legislative Budget Board has reported that this budget will cost the state of Texas 300,000 jobs. Budget catastrophe? Yes, definitely, no quotation marks needed. All this, and it doesn't even fully balance their budget.

All this, in a bill that Perry supported and signed. If he somehow manages to win the nomination, this is going to make some beautiful attack ads.

The fact that liberals do not like the solution does not make it not a solution. California, of course, used an identical accounting gimmick. The rest is their policy preference.

Even with 300k less state employees, Texas will still be #1 in job creation. Such is life.

You did, of course, rather creatively substitute words, as the word 'will' was substituted in for 'could' in the following sentence. But that's your problem, not theirs.

"The House budget proposal could lead to 300,000 fewer state and private jobs"

Here is an economist article from after the changes.

http://www.economist.com/node/18744627

That brought the state to nearly $78.5 billion, with a bit more expected to come in if the economy continues to improve. But it left some $20 billion in unfunded commitments relative to the earlier projections. With Republicans dominating state government, there was little question of raising revenue. On May 20th the House and Senate agreed to spend $80.6 billion over the 2012-2013 biennium.

$2 billion is of course relatively trivial and much better than other states.

He's not very smart if he would even mention trying to compete in California, which is a state that wouldn't be favorable to him at all.

Sure, he would compete against President Obama in California, as in all other 49 states. Indeed he would probably get his largest volume of total votes there. But 35% of the total vote in California is bigger than 55% of the vote in Texas... but absolutely useless according to the way in which the state casts its electoral votes.

But that said, the putrid 2003 Detroit Kittens Baseball Team (43-119) competed against the  New York Yankees (101-61), too.
