Men are socialized to be competitive, women are socialized to be cooperative.

Does this seem like a cooperative message board?

It is interesting.

You know, the other forum I'm on, Something Awful, is roughly 2/3rds male, but in a 90k person community that's still a lot of girls.  As a result, there are thriving, uninterrupted threads on subjects like the most effective treatment of menstrual cramps and how to get over miscarriages, as well as a gigantic thread on pregnancy and one of the best cooking boards on the Internet (Goons With Spoons).  SA has stuff girls want to talk about, and girls show up.  This place...well...doesn't.

... our late 90's looking message board is kind of retro.

In fact I think this is my favorite thing about it.  I detest innovation, and most newer web sites are horribly difficult and unpleasant to use.

I like that too, but there are girls who are into retro stuff. Not all (or even most) girls are simpering balls of fluff, and the attitude that they are is I think an example of part of why they may not like it here (not saying that's something that you're necessarily responsible for, it just is what it is).

Or try to act less aggressive, which won't happen any time in the future on Atlas. We have the debates that won't significantly change with the way lot of the more extreme posters that will allow females to come in and debate.

For the guy saying Tea Party and Libertarian members are the reason most females won't step a foot, it's because of the way we guys act on this board.

I look forward to the day when posting on a forum about politics is no longer a -- mostly -- exclusively male activity.  However, I'm not confident I will live to see that day.

It just has to happen under the right circumstance. The moderators have tried to fix this problem and it seems like the forum will stick to 99% male demographic.

Has anyone made a BRTD-Dudefest joke in this thread yet? If not, I'll reserve a space for it.

Women are pretty underrepresented on the internet in general. Most tech and nerdish websites (and yes a forum focused on politics & elections fits this description) are 80%+ male.

On some forums that I mention such as Democratic Underground they aren't. You can tell how femine the board is when you start seeing women disgust about guy's talking about strip clubs.
