inspired by this gem from one of our moderators, who, according to a close reading:

I'm going to assume that this also due to his history showing some clear, uh, "issues" too? Banning someone simply for comments made off the forum, even like these can set a worrying precedent when you consider that:

1-It's not too difficult to fake being someone else in chat.
2-Some people have difficulty understanding sarcasm or comments made in jest.
3-A person might say very stupid things when they are simply drunk or whatever.

But Teddy being "unbalanced" has been fairly obvious since his first account.

How about this for a general rule: If you talk about committing a violent crime against another person in a way that merits police action, then yes, you will get banned here no matter where that act occurs. Never mind the fact that the comments elsewhere eventually migrated to this site, and were discussed on this site by the perpetrator.

"WHAT TERRIBLE LACK OF FREEDOM WE HAVE WHEN I CAN'T TALK ABOUT KILLING A SPECIFIC FORUM MEMBER"

believes that such discussion, in any forum (lowercase-f), with any other person, directed at any other person, should be a bannable offense.

the basic intent behind this is, in my opinion, to create a web of 'rules' that are so ambiguous and wide-ranging that Moderators will be free to take concerted action against any poster they dislike

and if your name isn't David Leip, don't infract me and don't delete this.  this is not "Trolling", as you nondescript geese like to call anything and everything you desire, this is a serious issue, it's our Community, and we have a right to speak.

also note the use of "talked about" rather than "threatened to"...  which form of language is wider and more encompassing?

Define "talked about".

If you mean I might've said I would kill somebody when I was pissed off, then yes.  At least a dozen times.

If you mean I took aside a friend of mine and talked with an orgasmic smile on my face how I wanted to erase somebody from existence........zero.
Well except for that one joke conversation I had with one of my buddies while I was drunk on St. Valentine's Day about how I wanted to kill Nickelback.

In fear of receiving death points, I won't go into detail, but I have threatened the life of more than one person in my life. Oops :x

I think it would be over the top to threaten to kill somebody.  When I was about 12 I went into a Yahoo chat room and some Pakistani guy said he was going to come and kill me.  It was the first time someone ever threatened to kill me.  My response, of course, was to laugh pretty hard.

I have said many times about people I am very upset with, but always in a joking manner "sometimes I just wanna strangle so and so".  But that is hardly 'talking about committing a violent crime'... it is a common combination of run of the mill anger/frustration meeting a nice dollop of hyperbole and a half.

And I'd just as soon cook them a nice breakfast and have a civil conversation where we can maybe work out our problems.  And if not, we can always talk about the weather.

At the same time, I think Mr. Moderate has got his undies in a bundle over this... I am sad to see Teddy banned and I don't think he should have been.

His threats against Joe Republic were wrong.  He apologized because he knew they were wrong.  And even if he didn't, it's Teddy.. do you really think he could've pulled it off?  There are two sides to every blade of autism.

Thought about without any intention of following thought? Yes
Talked about doing it, largely in jest? Yes
Talked about it seriously? Never

I agree with Snowie on this.

Teddy has some serious issues, but he was certainly not a threat in any real way.
