Shouldn't Democrats target a less prominent statewide office first?

That way they show that they can win stateside and get money flowing.

Pretty much their only hopes in 2018 are Julian Castro for Gov (if Perry wins)/Sen (if Cruz continues to be as outlandish or even becomes crazier) or Wendy Davis (ONLY FOR LOWER-RANKING OFFICES). Castro sounds committed to SA, and Davis already wants to run for reelection. Her term's up next year.

There will be an opening in the AG seat. Rick Perry is retiring and Greg Abbott is running for governor.

Shouldn't this be prime target for Democrats?

I don’t believe in the Emerging Democratic Majority narrative, but I can definitely see the Democrats winning the gubernatorial race in 2014 or 2018, depending on how tired Texans are of Rick Perry.

They need to run a good Blue Dog and have a better-than neutral environment.
