Reagan was very popular, charismatic, and other than our debt we had a very strong GDP of 7.2% in 1984. Walter Mondale was a very weak candidate who paled in comparison. Other than our debt Reagan is known as an outstanding president.

Reagan won by a huge margin in 1984 due to the booming economy in contrast to the "stagflation" that characterized most of the 1970s, relatively stable world stage (save for the tensions between the US and the Soviet Union), his charisma and personality and due to the fact that Walter Mondale was not a strong candidate. Gary Hart might have done slightly better than Mondale against Reagan, but still would have lost by a landslide.
