This was the first time such temperatures were recorded using satellites to measure them.  Interestingly, they're not "official" because the satellite picked them up, so the official coldest temp is still the -126 or whatever it is.

Makes you wonder what the real hottest temp ever recorded is.  If we've managed 134F with a thermometer in Death Valley... it has probably been quite a bit hotter in some hellsaken depression somewhere.

I've seen it stated that that is indeed suggested by the satellites, yeah. Southeast Iran / Southwest Pakistan being the place to look.
