For some reason this really annoys me. I've heard people use "digital" to contrast online music downloads to CD's. There are so many things that are digital but not computer-based: CD's, DVD's, virtually all broadcast, cable and satellite TV these days, HD radio (though this last one is not mainstream), and the list goes on...

It just seems like people use "digital" to mean "online" in many cases.

It doesn't bother me any more than it does when people say they are going to dial someone on their cellphone.

Nah, language always evolves. Technically, "digital" should mean "related to fingers". Tongue

Is this an American thing? I've never heard of digital being used as a synonym for online.

No, I've never heard it used in that context either. Apparently, it's a southern thing. Tongue I would find it annoying if someone used them synonymously however.
