Free will. Why would it matter to Jesus if he's God? It's not like Satan would have succeeded.

One possible answer could simply be that Christ is not God.

This may be terrible theology, but it seems to me that from a dyothelite (Christological view that Christ had two wills: One human, one divine) perspective (which is embraced by most Christians churches with the exception of the Oriental Orthodox and possibly Mormons, idk) that Christ's human will could've caused him to be genuinely tempted by Satan's offerings, while his divine will simultaneously precluded any potential of him actually accepting them.

Additionally, as Small L said, Christ could simply have allowed Satan to try and tempt him, despite their being no chance of it actually happening (unless one believes that God possesses the ability to make Himself susceptible to temptation, but that has a number of messy implications).

Jesus was human and thus could be tempted.  If it was inevitable that Christ would not succumb to temptation then his ministry and the whole crucifixion and resurrection would have been a farce.

I admit this is a bit of an ad-hoc explanation but a reason why Jesus let Satan tempt him could be to demonstrate his superiority over the powers of evil. By resisting Satan's temptations Jesus highlighted his godly nature and complete supremacy.

This reminds me of a debate over some of Ellen White's writings where she suggests that Jesus could have sinned.  I honestly don't think it matters whether or not He could have sinned because He was tempted to sin but resisted.

Free will. Why would it matter to Jesus if he's God? It's not like Satan would have succeeded.
Exactly.

While being the Son of God, it is important to remember that Jesus is also the Son of Man.

Verse 10 shows that though Satan was there trying to tempt him, Jesus still had authority over him when he essentially told him to GTFO and Satan left.

That just proves Satan had good sense.  It's not really possible to tempt someone who won't listen to you.

I guess my understanding of fairly standard Christian theology would make the answer that, in order for humanity to be fully redeemed after the Fall in the Garden, God had to not only become human, but be subject to every vulnerability that human beings experience, and still remain perfect.  A life without temptation would not be a really human life, and so Jesus had to undergo it.

Not a bad theological answer from an atheist, huh?  Tongue
