This week was the last schoolweek of the year. In the last schoolweek, classes usually take stuff like hiking etc. before getting their final report cards today.
A school class from Saalfelden, the biggest city in my district, decided to go swimming at the swimming center in my home city Zell am See on Tuesday.
Then a 12-year old girl went from the kids-pool to the deep-area at a brief moment when the teachers did not look and the girl went underwater.
The lifeguard in there went in the water and pulled her out and re-animated her until the emergency doctors were here.
The girl was flown to the hospital, but died a few hours later.
As sad as it is, this is not all the sad news:
As it turns out, the girl is from a Syrian war refugee family who fled their town in Syria - first to Lebanon, then to Turkey.
Their father had to leave them behind in Turkey and went to Austria.
The father managed to get asylum papers in Saalfelden, Austria 9 months ago and the authorities here managed to get the whole family here to him a few months ago and the kids started school here.
And now this ...
RIP.
