I got a refurbished laptop because my piece of junk windows 8 laptop's wireless adapter quit.  I got a nice little Dell with Windows 7 on it but it didn't come with Windows 7 CD. Should i create a back up of Windows 7 first in case?

Technical wise it looks to be in good shape and style for the upgrade but I was wondering how the process was. Was it easy or difficult for you? Did you the straight download or the put on a DVD/USB route?

I just upgraded from 8 to 10 last week. I used the straight download and it took about 3 hours total for all steps. I had to upgrade my Kaspersky to match 10 and do a little digging to find some of my apps, but everything is working so far.

It took a couple hours to download, and of course it's annoying to have to figure out new software.

The only issue I've run into so far concerned my printer; I had to go and dig up my old start-up CD.  But even that's running fine now.

I did, then immediately downgraded back to Windows 7, I'm an IT Professional and I abhor Windows 10.

That's what worries me lol.

The people who refurbished the laptop installed Windows 7 from a CD but didn't include it. It took me forever to validate because they did a bad job of giving a slip telling me to look for the code, I had to download a random program just to find it.

How easy is it to back up Windows 7? Can you put it on a DVD in case you need too if it's on the laptop?

How hard was it to go back?

I've had it since the day after it came out, and it's worked pretty well. I heavily recommend the upgrade.

My 2-in-1 is new enough that it only came with 8.1. I liked 7, but 10 is much preferred to 8 as some one who uses the laptop mode more than the tablet mode.

I like 10 just fine.  7 was good too.  Hell, even the Vista computers at work weren't that bad (since upgraded to 7).  Having lived through Win98/98SE and WinME (and those guys were bliss compared to Win95) all of the NT based WinOSes have been a joy.

I tried to upgrade my old laptop (Originally a Vista machine from 2008) that I never use to Win10 from Win7. It failed and now the whole thing's wiped, including the WinXP partition which I specifically did not want the installer to touch and the Vista recovery partition. My intention was the preview the OS to see if I should consider upgrading my actual desktop gaming* computer but the answer is obviously no if the thing cannot even be trusted to install at all.
