In the four years since James Madison was elected president over incumbent Aaron Burr, the rift in the Democratic-Republican party has largely healed, with Burr's former supporters returning to the Republican fold following Madison's inauguration. With a newly reunited party behind him, Madison has enjoyed much success as president. On the domestic front he has kept taxes low and reduced the standing army raised by Burr, as well as sent an expedition led by Captain William Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory. On the international stage, Madison has overseen the defeat of the Barbary Pirates. Tensions with Britain currently dominate the diplomatic stage, and Madison has won points for his strong response to the attack on the U.S.S. Chesapeake by the Royal Navy, though some doubt that the recently-enacted embargo will be effective.
Madison is opposed in the Democratic-Republican caucus by Vice President George Clinton, who favors a strong military response to British aggression, and Secretary of War James Monroe, who has the support of the remains of the Burr faction. With the murder of Alexander Hamilton in 1805, the Federalist Party is without a leader. Senator and 1804 presidential nominee John Marshall is the front runner to receive the party's nomination, but former Governor Charles C. Pinckney and Senator Rufus King are also running.

In a recap of 1804, Madison and Marshall have won their respective caucuses. The General Election will be up shortly.
