2016 and 2017 were the worst by far. 2021 and 2022 also to a lesser extent. So bad, the other 16 might as well be a tie.

*Memories are hazy at best

Generally the years were good even if at the time I may have not agreed as much myself. 2024 is way too early and there is a good chance it could go up to the best year (or could be by far the worst) within the span of a few weeks. Also this is relative. I don’t really think I’ve had a truly horrible year yet, and am probably due one soon. Who knows how I’ll actually cope…

These are in order within categories.

Have memories from these years, but not clearly enough to rank:
2004 - I was in preschool
2005 - I was 5/6 years old
2006 - I was 6/7 years old

Too early to rank because it's only February:
2024

Great:
2018 - graduated high school, tried college for a year, fall semester was good for the most part

2017 - Finally was at a school I liked for once

2011 - Finished elementary school, started middle school, in Indianapolis

2010 - Finally had friends for once

Good:
2019 - continued from 2018, dropped out of college for several reasons, began working, deconverted from Christianity

2012 - Had a couple school friends, and school was fun...at least for now

2007 - I was in first/second grade and didn't face many major issues yet given I was so young, so good year by default

Meh:
2008 - Maternal grandfather, who had Alzheimer's, had a stroke which put him in a nursing home; otherwise good year, except for autism + ADHD making school somewhat frustrating

2023 - Stale job, and honestly a very boring year; at least my Pokemon Unite team made the postseason instead of finishing second from the bottom

2021 - COVID, but to a lesser degree

2009 - School didn't know how to deal with an autistic kid and my maternal grandfather died in September

2013 - School bullying and diagnosed with depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Bad:
2020 - COVID year and I work at a grocery store, enough said

2022 - Job getting stale, lost one of my aunts and my maternal grandmother 5 weeks apart, joined a competitive Pokemon Unite league where our team's "captain" was a jacka** who not only didn't care to get better at the game/work as a team, but also: forced me to play a match while drunk, tried to blame me for us losing the match we played (my grandma had passed 4 days earlier and her funeral was the next day), ragequit the whole league, aired the team's dirty laundry to the public server, and then tried to join another team. Thankfully, I'm still friends with two of my season 1 teammates.

2014 - Bullying and began hating my school

Awful:
2015 - Bullied, all my friends left for other schools, school treated its 10-18 year old students like little kids (special ed school), began drinking alcohol to relieve stress

A year so awful it deserves its own category:
2016 - Drinking was near alcoholism levels of bad, attempted suicide in February, decided it was time to quit the terrible school; liked the new school but the first half of the year made the year unsalvageable

Interesting question… I’m starting in 2010 because 2004 feels like so long ago.

2015
2018
2014
2013
2017

2016
2012
2019
2020
2021

2022
2023
2011
2010

Unfortunately seems like theres a clear arc of getting better and then getting worse lol. The mid-2010s were my peak.

Good
2006 Married the love of my life.
2008 First child.
2010 Second child.
2017 Beat breast cancer.
Bad
2004 Divorced my biggest mistake.
2016 Lost my favorite boob to the above cancer.
2020 Lost the love of my life to COVID.
The rest are mostly a dull blur.

This is kind of hard to do because the natural periodization of life when you're a student is linking fall semesters to spring semesters in the next year. So using that:

Best:
2006-2007 (had a teacher I really liked)
2009-2010 (made some good friends)
2014-2015 (really developed friendships, matured a lot socially)
2016-2017 (was part of a dynamic social world in college which was at its best here)

Good:
2004-2005 (had a good teacher)
2007-2008 (had the same teacher as the previous year)
2012-2013 (started to make more friends, Obama won reelection, came out to my family as gay)
2013-2014 (made more friends, did some cool stuff)
2022-2023 (lived with good friends, work got very stressful. Finally started coming out as trans. Did a bunch of stuff that was good for me but unpleasant.)

High Highs and Low lows:
2015-2016: (made a lot of friends, very formative. Some people were fairly sh** however)
2019-2020: (got a job that I liked, then Bernie lost and covid)
2020-2021: (covid, though the post vaccine period got to be quite nice)
2021-2022: (more good vibes in 2021, but some very tough stuff in spring 2022)

Ehh:
2010-2011: (middle school is not a place of honor)
2011-2012: (high school is not a place of honor)
2017-2018: (the tight social scene of early college thinned out a bit)
2023-present?: (moved across the country, socially transitioned. Did a bunch of stuff that was good for me but stressful)

Bad:
2005-2006: (was bullied a lot)
2008-2009: (realized I was gay and started also feeling a way that in retrospect was a sign I was trans. Was in a very dysfunctional class)
2018-2019: (probably was clinically depressed, cash-strapped, probably the least happy period in my life even though things have been objectively worse other times)

An exercise in narcissism, but still quite fun!

We had a bunch of "Grade The Years" threads (which I took to mean for you personally) a while ago, so I'm mostly going off that:

From Best to Worst:

1. 2012
2. 2007
3. 2011
4. 2010
5. 2014
6. 2019
7. 2005
8. 2016
9. 2023
10. 2022
11. 2006
12. 2017
13. 2009
14. 2013
15. 2004
16. 2021
17. 2018
18. 2015
19. 2020
20. 2008

It might be more interesting in terms of seasons (even though that doesn't apply to Australia like it does to America for obvious reasons) - there's quite a few examples of years where I enjoyed half the year but out and out hated another half of it.

Only one year I really have out and out negative feelings for, but equally the vast majority would be fairly mixed. That said all of my Top 7 I'd give a pretty positive grade to.
