Too many names to list, so I'll opt out of doing a poll. Who are your favorite French reactionaries?

François-René de Chateaubriand for me.

Well, Châteaubriand is partly redeemed for its literary stature, especially as it inspired a young Victor Hugo. Still, all reactionaries are vile.

I was considering submitting Beaumarchais, who was outside the bounds of proper Old Regime conduct but nonetheless found himself one of the emigres during the Revolution. Balzac's probably a better choice.

Since reactionary, like radical, is a term relative to its time and place, does this mean that anyone opposing the current order (regardless of how despicable that current order is) in favor of a past one is vile?
