This is obviously a fairly hypothetical question, but what would a President who is on the second year of his second term do if he got everything done that he wanted done? Would he turn to foreign affairs, or just wait till his successor is sworn in?

Polk declined to run for re-election. But usually they find new things to do as President.

Wasn't Polk pretty ill by the time he would have run for re-election? I'd say if you were deathly ill and completed your agenda, there's no need to run again.

Seriously though, in this modern age, I don't think it's possible to fulfill the lengthy agendas all presidents promise, so it's unlikely for a president to willingly limit themselves to one term. If a president did finish everything they wanted to finish, I think they'd pull a Polk, or just come up with new things to do.

Polk's health might not have been that great, but he died of cholera that he contracted post Presidency.

Focus on foreign policy.

Make sure the administration's accomplishments have plenty of built-in defenses so they're not easily repealed.

Try to become a unifying figure for both parties, acting more like a head of state than a politician.

At that point, the President's top priority would be protecting the accomplishments. There's making sure everything's administered correctly, and that any departing officials are replaced by suitably competent alternatives.

Well if Clinton fulfills her wish and somehow get a immigration reform bill perhaps under Speaker Ryan, under the scenario that certain conditions are met with the security fense, and legal status is granted, she will somehow go back to securing a mideast deal with Syria and Palestian Authority and try to get a deal out of BB Netanyahu. It will look mavelous if she reaches both accords with conservative leadership in both instances.
