Are him and Forbes close.  If so, could this be a opening for Forbes to stay in the house after redistricting took out his seat.

That's my guess too. I would be surprised if Hurt called it quits with politics that early.

Yeah, redistricting could really put the hurt on Forbes otherwise.

That kinda sucks since Forbes is a pretty hardcore right wing conservative.   It would've been nice to see him go.

I'm praying Hurt's brother Charles runs for this seat. The only other candidate considering is my State Senator Bill Stanley, who is a greasy fratboy scumbag who does not belong anywhere close to Congress.

IMHO - he went too far. From moderately conservative Democrat of his legislative days through very conservative Independent and, later, Republican congressman to Constitutional party "banner". And this district doesn't have a deficit of very conservative (but competent) Republican candidates. It's Democrats who lack good candidates here (their most likely candidates come from Charlottesville and thus are, usually, unelectable  (being simply too liberal) in this district, which includes considerable part of conservative Southside)....

I'd say Tom Perriello did a great job for being "too liberal" for this district. Is there hope for a comeback? Or has re-distrcting made this district a little too conservative?

Perriello was somewhat too liberal for district, but he, surely, didn't voted as "flaming progressive" during his term. Nevertheless - he narrowly lost in 2010. Present VA-05 is about R+5 - not a good district for liberal candidate, except in the strongest of wave (but in this case Democrats will not need it too much)

This is the sort of seat that Democrats should target if they ever hope to take back the house.

If only. Although his support for Trump does upset me.

I voted against Pereiello in 2010 and would not vote for him if he ran again for ideological reasons. I will say though that Pereiello is a kind person who did not sell out and has earned my respect, even if he did take votes I find troubling.

Looks like I may have found a savior among the Democrats.

I like Haymore. He's not an ideological leftist and I like his cultural background. If he runs, I can see myself voting D against most R's, except for maybe Hurt's brother or Goode.

Would be a decent pickup opportunity in a wave.

Open seats are the most likely places for crazy things to happen.

This seat is conservative enough to flip only in biggest wave. Besides - most lilely Democratic candidates in this district are from Charlottesville area and thus - too liberal for rest of the district. The best GE candidate would be somewhat conservatively-inclined Democtrat from Southside, but there are very few of them now...

Mitt Romney carried this district 52.5-45.9%, McCain carried it 51.1-47.9%. So it would be a surprise if Democrats picked up this seat, and if they do so against a non-scandalous republican, it is probably because they are gaining 20 or more house seats nationwide.
