It would be close but Warner would probably win. Dems are going to be very cautious when dealing with their candidates and what job they currently hold or once held. The Senate position would hurt Bayh and pretty much any other Dem Senator considering a run (with a special exception to Hillary and maybe Feingold) against a Governor (or former Governor in this case).

ultimately it will be Sen. Evan Bayh -as i said numerous times, people are going to be antsy with a one-term southern governor, and there will be widespread concerns of his general lack of experience.

Evan Bayh, on the other hand, is a former 2-term governor and now a 2-term senator of a state even more Republican than Virginia -if people here think George Allen (a former governor, and now a senator) is the most likely to win the GOP presidential nomination despite the fact that he is a senator, i see no reason why Bayh can't do it either.

If Warner and Bayh face each other and divide up the moderate vote, Hillary is assured the nomination.  There has never been such a grip over a party in 100 years.  The Clinton political machine is too dominating to beat with Warner and Bayh and possibly Richardson all fighting amongst each other.  If they unite, they could possibly beat Hillary.  A Bayh/Warner ticket would be an excellent ticket.

Again, the liberal Democrats don't like Hillary. They're more likely to vote for Warner.

I don't know why people get in their head that Hillary is popular with the left.

Her approval ratings among self-described liberals are quite high, if I recall correctly.

The prospect of Warner v Bayh in the Democratic Party is not one, which I relish. It would perilously split the moderate Democrat vote

Preston, a Bayh/Warner ticket Smiley seems a pretty attractive one to me

Frodo, I favour Bayh Smiley for the reasons you have stated and you make a very good point, especially should 2008 be Senator v Senator
