Until the time they drop out. Higher numbers are worse, lower numbers are better. It's simply their added up placements over the time divided by how many contests they were in.

Final Results

Santorum: 11
Gilmore: 10.5
Huckabee: 9
Christie: 8
Fiorina: 7
Paul: 5
Bush: 4.67
Carson: 4.67

Kasich: 3.51
Rubio: 2.97
Cruz: 2.24
Trump: 1.32 (presumptively winning the rest)

Funny how Paul almost outperformed Bush on the whole despite being an Iowa drop-out.
