Tough one.  Social conservatives seem like they've already lined up behind Trump, but liberals might become energized for Clinton if another SCOTUS vacancy is staring them right in the face.

I've got a better one: a gunman kills all SCOTUS Justices but Ginsburg and the same day, scientists announce that they have successfully cloned 8 younger Ruth Bader Ginsburgs.

Staunch conservatives are not united behind Trump (ex. Myself). It would benefit him as much as her.

I can see Ginsburg retiring right before the election, just to make a point.  "If the Senate believes Merrick Garland's appointment should be subject to a popular mandate, the people can also give a mandate for my own replacement." *Mic drop*

That wouldn't qualify as a surprise.

Make the election completely about the SCOTUS? No way... that's how you consolidate #NeverTrumpers

How about 'no October surprise' as an October surprise?

That would actually swing me towards Trump if Ginsburg died before Obama left office and Garland wasn't confirmed.

Holy f[inks], this thread title scared me at a glance.

Anyway, I don't think she will ever retire, as she doesn't believe that anyone would appoint a justice quite like her and she seems to enjoy her job.  If something did happen to her, it would probably help Trump.

A few NeverTrumpers have come around to Trump solely on the Supreme Court issue.

Trump knows this. The GOP cares more about issues like these.

We have an open seat, and only the most diehard Democrats care.

Wikileaks still haven't produced their promised October surprise so we'll have to see if they have anything.

You already have one vacancy that will tip the balance of the court. A second one won't matter.

Plus, I think Ginsberg has kind of already hinted that she may leave in the first term of the next President, whomever it is.

All Garland would do is help the Republicans get back to 4 seats. It would be imperative to appoint a conservative which I don't trust Trump to do. Ginsburg dying before the election? That would mean that we could actually get some movement the other way.

The Senate would ask if they are mentally stable.
