My 2 cents as a non-Catholic:

Why would the Catholic Church change its teachings to pander to the US and Western Europe when religion in general is decreasing in those places and Catholicism is increasing in other parts of the world?

Indeed. The face of the future:

This makes me think that Trumpism may just be another intermediate phase of the Right Wing discourse as nationalism and dominionism become disjoint.

Not a great day to be a Catholic Hillary supporter, but I will be alright with this.

Explain what business the President of the United States has 'taking on' a religion.

Supporting policies that contradict the teachings of that religion.

Building a wall to keep out refugees, for example. Or simply "taking on" a particular religion by banning it from those who visit here.

Sad that right-wing Catholics are so #triggered by two devout Catholics benignly discussing their religion in private.

lol. What Podesta's done is grounds for explicit excommunication.

Okay, have fun excommunicating a majority of American Catholics. Roll Eyes

If only! In truth, these folks deserve much, much worse than excommunication. Not good! We're going to have to be very, very tough on heresy.

I am pretty sure, within a year or two you will be advocating for the excommunication of the Pope.

I am calling for a total and complete shutdown of Jesuits assuming the papacy until Vatican City's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.

There's a difference between that, which one would expect of any mainstream American politician since Catholic social teaching by design doesn't map easily onto a conventional liberal-conservative spectrum and is also not the kind of 'moderate' that's currently in fashion, and what's being discussed here.

My 2 cents as a non-Catholic:

Why would the Catholic Church change its teachings to pander to the US and Western Europe when religion in general is decreasing in those places and Catholicism is increasing in other parts of the world?

The majority of Catholics live in Latin America, where countries are legalizing gay marriage every year.

Isn't Catholicism declining there as well?

It is, often in favor of various iterations of boilerplate Evangelicalism or 'health and wealth' Pentecostalism, which is distressing.

True. But, to the extent there is any decline, it is because of conversion to evangelical Christianity. Those converts are the least likely to support gay marriage, etc. The actual Catholics are, in fact, on average somewhat more liberal than the society itself.

I never said that politicians should just do everything the exact opposite way of how the Catholic Church wants it just to be edgy.

Anyway, what's being discussed here seems to be just criticizing the Catholic Church of their antiquated social views, which I have no problem with.

So, Mexico doesn't have the growing Atheist/non-religious trend that you see in America and Western Europe?

Literally this email only shows Clinton staffers criticizing the Catholic Church for being too conservative, and for wanting liberal reforms. It's a widely held point of liberals, that they oppose conservative religious doctrine. No story here.

Yes, it has (as all across Latin America) but the decrease of the catholic population is due to a growing non-religious population and at the same because evangelicals (specifically pentecostalism) are making inroads in the popular classes of the continent. I don't know if that makes catholics more liberals than the overall population but evangelicals are the most conservative by far.

I'm not sure Erickson's one to be saying some of this stuff but it's still a fantastic read.

i would love it if at least a 1/10 of the outrage against podesta would also be used to demean "religious idols", like ben carson, getting away with stuff like:

"Sometimes you put your Christian values on pause to get the work done"
https://twitter.com/MMASOCCERFAN/status/786914239483183105

as jon stewart used to say, if you are not sticking to your valuers, when they are being tested, they are not your values...they are hobbies.
