He won a higher percentage of Democrats than Clinton did of Republicans.

And it doesn't take into account people who switched registration, as well as Trump doing better with independents perhaps including those who weren't registered as Dem but referred to themselves as such.

They exist, but they're likely not greater in number than Romney Democrats or Bush Democrats. The Republican candidate tends to win between 5 and 10% of Democrats, just like the Democratic candidate tends to win a similar percentage of Republicans.

According to the exit poll, it was the same (Trump won 8% of Dems and Clinton won 8% of Republicans).
