Why did any tourists think this was a good time to go to Gambia in the first place?

Why're you guys so focused on the tourist part of this story, rather than the outbreak of a potential regional war?

This has been going on for a while. This thread seemed to have been focused on the tourists. If it's not, change the thread title and OP.

People are reading into this very wrong.  And it's annoying.

The fact that tourists are scrambling is being reported not to show how "stupid" they were for going there.  They are reporting it as a sign of how serious this has become.

Gambia has been a pretty well established "winter sun" type destination for Europeans for quite some time

You're misreading us. Or at least me.

I know that's what was intended. But seriously, this story has been brewing for weeks, we knew it was coming to this. It was already serious, we knew this was coming. And since tourists are mentioned, they should have known better.

All of the sun-and-beach locales in the Middle East and Africa are dying: Turkey, Egypt (to the extent its economy is in free fall), Tunisia, ..., Gambia.

Because whatever the age and gender some needs are just hardly repressible?

This was the 'specialty' of Gambian 'tourism'.

As to what's going on there, Jammeh seems to be pretty isolated within its administration and 'law and order' doesnt seem very firm when u see people celebrating in Banju, then less chances for a tough outcome apparently so far.

I'd be more concerned for the citizens of these countries, than the European tourists who will have to visit somewhere else now.

At least somebody has sense enough to say this.

I don't understand: the fact that tourism in these places is dying is the news. It wouldn't be reported otherwise.

These white people have completely forgotten their English: they should be reviewing their articles.
