What do you think that the potential is for the rumors about Cory Booker being gay getting drudged up by the Republicans and used to try and discredit him among the 24% of people who wouldn't vote for a gay guy?

I mean, with everything else--his alleged corporatism and big city Wall Street image--could Trump try and use these rumors to make Booker look like another Jared Polis--another gay eccentric millionaire?

And also, if Trump wouldn't do this, is there a possibility that if Pence takes over due to impeachment/resignation, he would try this tactic?

May I see this 24% statistic?

Pew had support for gay marriage among blacks at 42%.

Of course, sorry I forgot to link it in the first post. It's the same poll that was cited so much last year about what percent of Americans would vote for a socialist (and Muslim, woman, etc.)

That actually brings up a good point, I was thinking of the general election but if this comes out before SC and the Southern states vote, even with Democratic opponents supporting Booker and refusing to make it an issue (because the alternative is political suicide in a Dem primary), this could tank him among the only major constituency I see people saying he could lock up--the African American vote, and if he can't hold AAs he isn't getting the nod.

Booker is pretty good at the pulpit so it may make it up for it.

His sexuality will not hurt his candicacy. His corporate ties will though.

Gay rumors will not hurt Booker.  Evidence that he's engaged in gay sex will definitely hurt him.

I'm not sure what the net effect would be if he were gay and just flat out came out with it early on, but if he's thinking about the Presidency, I would advise him to come out because he's asking folks to help him in a big way if he runs for President, and he doesn't want an issue like this blowing up at the wrong time and make him look deceptive.

Looking duplicitous will hurt him. Being open won't.

It wouldn't now, so why would it in 2020? The people who care aren't voting Democratic anyway.

This is going to be an issue and your virtue signalling won't change that.

And trust me, the American people-while not totally apolitical and consumed by scandal-mongering-do care a good bit about this. We are a gossipy nation. We won't vote against Cory Booker because he's gay but people are going to want to know.

One of the conservative pundits (I think it was Jonah Goldberg) who wasn't big on Trump in the primaries pointed out that Trump was a great communicator.  He pointed out that Trump hit folks with simple points at all his rallies, and threw in some celebrity gossip at all of his rallies (a commodity no one gets enough of).  I didn't think Trump was a great speaker at his rallies, but he gave his audience what they wanted.

I would be very disappointed to see a candidate be hurt by being gay, or having gay sex. Very bigoted; nobody would bat an eye if a single male presidential candidate was rumored to be having consensual sex with single adult women. So ridiculous...
