The voters will put a stop to it, just like they did in Nebraska and California.  The only place this is gaining steam is among the elite, who want to boost the prison population.

If you do a crime, do the time. Stop making excuses for criminals. We can't have criminals roaming the streets doing their crap that got them in jail.

Eh on this issue.

Because clearly there's absolutely nothing wrong with the U.S. having 25% of the world's prison population when it makes up 5% of the world's total population, right?

He is for prison overcrowding.  It's inhumane.

I am not. What I am saying is if you do a crime you do the crime. Stop with the preferences. Get out of jail and do something with your life, and leave society the hell alone. I am against mass incarceration but I am against the boo-hoo poor the criminal nonsense that the Left does.

Then get serious about crime, for the love of God.

Unfortunately, this effort appears to be dead for this session because a co-sponsor of the bill was actually the stereotypical blood-lusting Southern Republican (no disrespect to those Southerners or Republicans who have enlightened view on this matter):

I'm disgusted, but I'm also amazed this was even a possibility in such a socially conservative state (albeit with a strong Catholic tradition). Hopefully, especially if Democrats can makes gains in the Legislature, this could be considered again in the future. Just the fact that this was that close clearly makes Louisiana the most probable Southern state for death penalty abolition.

if they guilty of the crime they should do the time.

But I'm with you, I want a lot fewer people in jail.  But unlike Dems and Pubs, I actually vote in a way that would decrease the prison population because the people I vote for actually want to get rid of laws that put people in prison.  Everybody got upset at all cops when Eric Garner got chocked out and died because he was selling a single cigarette.  Why get mad at the cops for doing their job and not get mad at the idiots that made it illegal to sell a single cig?

You want less people in jail (and fewer interactions with poor people and the cops), make less things illegal.

Regardless of your position on removing the laws you speak of, Choking out someone isn't doing your job.

Still, overcriminalizing everything and viewing constituents as a piggy bank for the local munis and their enforcement arms to abuse is a big part of how we got here
