Frist is retiring in '06 so the GOP will need to pick a new leader (regardless of whether it is in the majority or minority) after the midterms. Let's assume that McConnell turns it down and Santorum loses re-election. Who do you think is next in line for the spot?

Apart from Sen. Trent Lott.......

Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, maybe?  He certainly has seniority, and would have solid support from conservatives.

Or perhaps Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran.

trent lott wants it. Also, I wouldnt be surprised to see Brownback and Allen try to get in for more national Name ID. I am not saying they will get it but I wouldnt be surprised if they give it a try.
Black horse: Mike Enzi (Wyo). Quiet but is well known behind the scenes.

I think he's trying for Whip - though he would be great at either Smiley

I'd love to see Specter have it...fat chance though :-p

Lott won't get it...and Cochran might actually be too much a maverick (with a slight social liberal streak...relatively speaking)

My money's on Kyl.

Isn't Hutchinson a tad too "moderate" for the leadership?

I thought she was pro-choice?

she's a little moderate, but has received 90 and 100 ratings from the National Right to Life Committee in the last few years.

And she's currently the 4th ranking Republican; behind the 3 that one said would be gotten out of the way, so it's logical as well.

Though, realistically, it'll be Mitchie.

Hutchinson is pro-choice.  She voted Yes on a bill that "Expressed the sense of the Senate in support of the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion."

She also voted Yes on banning partial-birth abortion.

I think a conservative Dem has a better shot at being the GOP leader over Specter so that's not happening.

Alexander was trying for Whip and won't get that anyway. If Santorum loses, Lott will try for it and win.

I was thinking of Kyl for the spot, too. Hopefully he's interested if he needs to step up.

I was just saying how she's perceived by the different interest groups; while she's gotten either 90 or 100% approval by NRTL from 99-04, she's gotten 20 or less from NARAL.

Since I see no reason why Mitch wouldn't want it, that's probably who it'll be barring the Republicans losing the Senate in 2006 (unlikely).

That being said, if he declines it, the next in line would be Hutchinson (unless Santorum pulls out the miracle comeback) and I would have to think that she would want the job and would have the support.

If not Mitch, then it will be Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Chuck Grassley, a popular, experienced Republican from my home state.

It might be Grassley, but I doubt it. He;s my favorite Senator, but I feel he wishes to keep on agricultural boards, that why we elect him every six years, so Iowa can have seniority on the agricultural baords in the Senate. That's also why we keep electing Harkin.

Iowa has a very good mix of Senators.  Both Harkin and Grassley represent their state well, and a two of the better senators in their respective parties.
