I would like to announce that I have switched allegiance to the Republican Party. I've also changed my avatar to Wyoming because it's always been my favourite state.

I've decided that Bush is the right man for the Presidency. John Kerry is just a bleeding-heart liberal who hates America and supports terrorists.

Michael Z,

I can't believe you went back to the Democratic Party. How can you support a party that supports equal rights, civil liberties, pacifism, concern for poor, humane treatment for criminals, and environmental protection?

I've seen your sarcasm twice now, nccon. Are you a republican, a democrat, and independent, or just playing April Fools jokes.

He does identify the dems as the party of pacifism, the cause of the second world war and holocaust, however. aSo he must have some conservative leanings.

And the Republicans weren't at some fault for WWII? Harding steered away from the League of Nation, and he and his successors ignored the failingTreaty of Versailles.

Why not add to the perceived arrogance of Americans?  Go ahead.  Don't you realize that neither Democrats nor Republicans had anything to do with starting WWII.  The pacific theater began about a year before Roosevelt was even elected for his first term, and the European theater began more than two years before our country got involved.  Sometimes it is said North Americans have a shallow view, or an inaccurate view of world history.  Most of the time, the posters on this forum show contradictory evidence.  Unfortunately, often enough, sometimes the posts herein support that conclusion.  Please, give your collective ethnocentries a little rest.

I am nclib, and yes, both posts were April Fool's jokes. Of course, in real life I am a liberal Democrat.

I hope neither post was offensive to anyone.

BTW, did Dave Leip delete the other thread (in the 2004 election) ?

I suppose that you're refering to the Japanse-Chinese war?

It depends on how counter-factual one wants to be...the Versailles Treaty with its harshness towards Germany obviously is part of the reason, and the WWI entente, in particular France, is to blame for this. One can also blame the Western Democracies for not standing up to Hitler...that would be the US a little more perhaps, considering your isolationist polciies. Then there is of course the German people and especially the NSDAP who has some smaller part of the blame as well... Tongue

Yeah, in the Western theater, I think Versailles and France bear that responsibility.  I think the nsdap was just a natural nationalistic response to that harshness.  And, yes, chamberlain and his friends in washington, in both parties, were hoping to avoid conflict.  Hindsight is 20/20.  Don't you agree?

On hindsight? Yes, of course, but that doesn't change the harsh fact that Chamberlain was wrong and Churchill was right. Now, let's not get started on Halifax...

I surrender.  You must know that I cannot possibly expect to escape any denigration of Churchill unscathed by either the American right or the European right.  Not sure I want to anyway, as the negative campaign against him in 1945 attaching him to Germans (recall the old movietone reels with the stressed pronunciation of Friedrich von Hayak run by his opponents on the Left), made me feel sorry for the man.  Like the way I felt sorry for Clarence Thomas about 15 years ago.  I still abhore negative campaigns.

A history buff like you might enjoy a perusal of the original Halifax/Roosevelt documents in some moment of spare time:
