Say Carter gets dumped by the Dems in favour of Teddy Kennedy and Teddy goes up against Ronnie… how would he do, how would the race shape up, who would be his VP and who would you vote for?

TEDDY!

He won New York Primary in 1980, and I was in the crowd for his victory speech!  Go Teddy!

Very interesting that you love Ted Kennedy so much, but have contempt for John Kerry.

Damn. I thought the question was "Who do you think would have won", and not "Who would you have voted for"... too late now, I cast my vote for Reagan. I feel all dirty.

My God WTF are you people talking about?  Reagan v. "Chapaquidick"(sp) Ted?  Reagan in an EVEN-BIGGER landslide.

I chose Reagan. I'm not so sure that Kennedy's attitude on foreign affairs would have been sufficiently tough in the conditions of the cold war. I have same problem with Carter, Mondale, Dukakis...and Kerry.

It would be tough but the Dems would have a "new wind in their sails"... Kennedy would really help the Dems compared to Carter... It would not be an even bigger landslide... I would say a Reagan win of say 3-6%... not becuase of Kennedy but because of the state of the econamy and general disatisfaction with the Democrats....

I read this interesting article in the Atlantic explaining how Ted Kennedy stopped Humphrey from picking Sargeant Shriver as VP, and how that pick would have won the elction for Humphrey.

I bet Ted Kennedy would have won against Reagan. Was Kennedy hated by Republicans for being liberal then? Anderson would have gotten Perot-like support if he ran against the two.

He wouldn't have won...but he'd be (fairly) close.

Given the choice between the conservative and liberal lions, it wouldn't have even been close.  America will always choose a conservative.  Witness Gore claiming to be a centrist in 2000 and Kerry even claiming to be somewhat conservative.   Reagan by knockout!

Not that different.  Look at the landslide of '72 between a moderate Reublican and a liberal Democrat.  Only a Dem centrist or one who portrays himself as a centrist has a real shot at the White House.

I dont think Kennedy v Reagan is moderate GOP v Liberal Dems.... Reagan was pretty radically conservative for the late 1970's, and paradoxically Kennedy was more moderate... dont get me wrong Reagan was a decent guy... but in 1980 Kennedy v Reagan is more like generic liberal democrat v conservative republican... in other  words very polarised and in the end very close IMHO....

That was 16 years before 1980, the country changed.
