Most political observers had expected Nader would easily draw enough supporters at a Monday evening petition-signing rally intended to make Oregon the first state to qualify Nader for the 2004 ballot.

But only 741 people showed up — far short of the 1,000 required by Oregon law.

I don't understand any of this. According to Ballot Access News (Richard Winger's publication) 15,306 signatures are required to get on the Oregon ballot as an independent. The deadline to file those signatures is August 24th. It looks to me like he has plenty of time left although he needs a lot more than 1,000 petition signatures.

do not make sense - several pepole including Buchanan got like 5000-8000 votes in the elections itself

"The ball game, it had to be the ball game," Nader muttered as he climbed a stairway leading to the stage.

It's a conspiracy I tell you, a conspiracy, those basketballs are out to get me!!!!!

He's done a lot of good for consumers and to top it off, he helped to elect a great leader (President Bush) for our country!  Thank you Ralph!... even know you didn't intend to help with that last bit Smiley

I have never believed that he did not intend to help with that.

Anyway, this is certainly good news for Kerry supporters.

If he can't make Oregon, he can't make it on anywhere.  If this holds up, there's no way Kerry loses Oregon.

Terry Mc Caulif was on Lou Dobbs and said he has talked to Nader and says that he thinks "Nader will do the right thing and drop out".

I doubt that Nader has said that, but he has called for a meeting with Kerry, he is not getting the support he needs, more and more progressive groups are denouncing him, and the polls show that he can be a factor.

...I predict he will drop out...the question is when

Don't worry, he'll get the signatures he needs. Did you all ever hear of his book, "Unsafe at any Speed". That book changed the auto industry and safety standards.

I'm glad there's at least one person who recognizes his accomplishments.

I notice the irony too:  Democrats impugn a man who has devoted his life to consumer activism, corporate-fraud exposition, public safety, and environmental awareness.  Meanwhile Republicans welcome his entry into the race.  As has been observed in this forum many times, the parties sure are a'changing.  Except for that old constant, national pride, which resides still within the GOP.

And as for national pride, I dunno. I've never been "proud" to be an American. Why would you be proud of being born in a specific country? I believe I'm an extremely lucky, fortunate, and blessed to be an American, but I'm not really proud.

I have scant evidence of vestigial catholocism in my persona.  You can bet your bottom dollar I have absolutely no qualms with sheer pride.  I never really bought into that one anyway.

"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others."

America is the worst country, except for all the others.
