I'd like to invite anyone with any questions about my policies or my positions on the issues to go ahead and ask me those on this thread.

What are your positions on renewable energy?

Well Ike, I believe developing cheap and reliable renewable energy is important for the future of the economic security as well as our national defense.  Today the middle east controls too much of our national agenda simply because we are dependent on that region to meet our energy needs.  I believe the government must take initiative in funding new energy sources.  In addition however, we need a shorterm solution for our dependence on middle east oil.  That's why I support drilling in ANWR and building a natural gas pipeline from Alaska.  Natural gas is cheaper than oil and it burns cleaner.

Hydrogen power also offers a promising solution to some of our energy woes.  We should devote a significant amount of resources into developing hydrogen powered cars.  We need to figure out how to make them cheap, efficient, and available.

And by the way, I don't hate poor people or the elderly.  Now public schools on the other hand.... Grin

Just like my distaste for prive schools.  This school year, I was on a math team.  We developed somewhat of a rivalry with a local private school.  And guess what?  We whupped on them!  HAHA!  TAKE THAT PRIVATE SCHOOLS! >: D >: D >: D

StevenNick, how do I know that you will stand by your principles? Not too long ago your signature was "Capitalist Pigs Forever". I took "Forever" to mean that no matter what happened you'd remain in the Capitalist Pigs fold as long as you were on this board. Then suddenly after the Republicans formed your signature was changed to "Republican Forever", a pretty hasty and unpondered change if you ask me, which brings me back to my question: how do I know you will stand by your principles and not just go with the way the wind blows as the example of signature change shows?

The first thing you have to understand is that throughout my various changes in party affiliation, my principles have remained the same.  I believe in small, effective government that protects its citizens from external threats such as foreign invaders as well as maintain order at home.  The government should only be large enough to do those things and no larger.

As a capitalist pig I stood for that.  As a republican I stand for that.

The second thing you have to understand is that I am the one, along with some other members of the forum (Nixon, Reaganfan, PB, etc.) who restarted the party.  It wasn't as if someone else restarted the party and I jumped on the bandwagon.  And I assure you, I will not be leaving this party.

But I also think it is important that everyone knows that political parties aren't as important to me as principles.  I would vote for a candidate of any party so long as he or she share my basic values.  Even if I weren't a republican, my principles would remain intact.  My principles will never change no matter what party I have been a member of.  In the end, that's what I ask you to evaluate me on.  Don't pay attention to my party affiliation--although, like I said before, I'm a republican for good this time--pay attention to my values.

Liberty, here's a copy of the platform I wrote for the new republican party.  Take a look at it and see what my values are:

Abortion
Although we are opposed to abortion in principle, we do not believe that abortion can or should be overturned immediately.  Instead, we support a ban on partial birth abortion and on all abortions performed after the first trimester.

Affirmative Action
The republican party does not support Affirmative Action in any case.

Crime
We are opposed to Three Strikes laws.  Such laws limit the duties of judges in sentencing criminals, unjustly assign nonviolent criminals inappropriately severe sentences, and add a burden to our overcrowded prison system.  However, we support tough penalties on violent criminals.  We support the death penalty in murder and terror cases, as well as for violent sex offenders.  We believe that steps need to be taken to reform our prison system and combat the scourge of prison rape that runs rampant in our prison system.

Education
We support common sense reforms to our public school system.  We support vouchers to increase school choice for low income students in failing schools.  We also support measures to give the States, local school districts, and individual schools more flexibility and decision making power.  We oppose burdensome federal regulations on schools.  Due to its violation of a state's right to regulate its own system of education, we believe that the No Child Left Behind Act should be repealed.

Environment
The environment must be protected for the sake of future generations through common sense, pro-free market laws.  We believe in exploring technology for alternative energy sources in addition to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve.  Emissions from plants should be limited through economic incentives rather than draconian government regulations.  We support laws and international treaties to curb global warming, although we believe this can and should be done in a manner that does not disrupt free enterprise.

Foreign Policy
We support the Bush doctrine of preemption and believe that any sovereign nation has such a right.  We also support the War on Terrorism.  Although we support international bodies and treaties, we also acknowledge that those bodies and treatise carry no weight without the threat of force backing them up.  Therefore, we support a strong foreign policy based on protecting justice and democracy throughout the world.

Government Spending
The Republican Party of the Atlas Forum wishes to cut the deficit.  We support a balanced budget amendment on the condition that it includes strict caps on spending increases.  Pork barrel spending needs to be stopped.  Wasteful programs need to be cut or reformed.

Gun Control
We are against gun control as well as any kind of national gun registry.

Health Care
Due to the rising costs of health care, we support tort reform to decrease the cost of malpractice insurance for doctors.  Doing so will lower premiums for all Americans.  Ordinary citizens should also have the ability to shop for insurance from companies that are not hampered by ridiculous state regulations.  We support a bill that would allow people to shop for insurance from out of state providers.

Iraq
The republican party supports President Bush's effort to fight terrorism through military action in Iraq.  We believe Saddam Hussein should be brought to trial and executed at the soonest possible opportunity.  Although we believe some mistakes have been made by the Bush administration in the rebuilding process, we also believe that Iraq is mostly on the right track.  The administration should continue to rebuild the country's infrastructure while extending equal rights to all Iraqi citizens.

Social Security
We believe that every American should have the right to invest a portion if not all of his or her Social Security investment.  Allowing Social Security to be invested would greatly increase economic growth, increase the rate of return on social security payments, and go a long way toward ensuring the program's fiscal solvency.

Same Sex Marriage
We are opposed to same sex marriage.

Taxes
We support a flat income tax in place of the current byzantine system of graduated rates, loopholes, and reverse incentives for saving.

Trade
We support NAFTA and other free trade agreements.  We believe that free trade creates prosperity for all Americans as well as for workers in developing countries around the world.  We reject the failed policies of Smoot-Hawley protectionists.

Welfare
Thankfully, Bill Clinton signed a Welfare Reform bill in 1997.  Unfortunately, that bill did not go far enough.  We support further reforms in the program to ensure that it is merely a safety net for the needy rather than a lifestyle.

Should you be elected, are you going to govern as a libertarian Republican or a more traditional Republican?  The primary difference between the two is social policy.

Are you willing to cut any defense spending to balance the budget and cut the deficit?  Or are you just going to focus on cutting things like welfare?

I'm not really sure I can answer your first question outright.  Personally, I am much more of a traditional republican rather than a libertarian.  However, on social issues, I feel that any great change in the law should come over time rather than in some kind of overnight revolution.  As a conservative, I'm generally suspicious of revolutions.  All that to say that if the senate passes a bill that addresses a social issue in accordance with my principles, I will sign that bill, but my agenda doesn't include any specific legislation on social issues.  I'm running for president to heal wounds, not to open new ones.  I hope that answers the first question to your satisfaction.

I would cut anything I felt needed cutting to balance the budget.  Many republicans forget that cutting the defense budget isn't necessarily indicative of a weakness on defense.  Eisenhower cut the defense budget numerous times during his eight years in office simply because the money was being spent on non-essential items.  Right now however, I don't think the defense budget is the main problem.  I would deal with that godawful Medicare "reform" bill first, then I would work on trying to cut some of the pork out of the budget before I took a real good look at the defense budget.
